We are starting our Two Million Minute Challenge beginning the second six weeks. All students have to do to help us reach our goal is to read 20 minutes each night! Research shows that reading 20 minutes each night is beneficial to your child. Please see below for more information. BES Reading Challenge “Who wants to read Two Million Minutes?” The library at Brenham Elementary School is challenging students to participate in the BES Reading Challenge: 2019-2020. The purpose of this challenge is to promote reading during the school year. This challenge is for individual students to read 3,000 minutes or more, and for all of BES to read more than two million minutes by May 1st. This may seem like an unachievable challenge but the benefits are developing better reading skills and creating a reading habit that can last a lifetime. Here’s how it will work. Each six weeks students will receive a reading log to record their minutes read each day, the total minutes they read each six weeks and a parent/guardian signature. Logs are to be turned in at the beginning of each new six weeks to the student’s homeroom teacher. Those teachers will collect the forms and turn them in to the library. **Reading logs must have a parent or guardian’s signature to be accepted.** There are many ways to read 3,000 minutes at home between September 29th and May 1st. Students may read silently or orally. They can also have the books read to them and/or you can also take turns with your reader. Reading to siblings is allowed and encouraged. Listening to audio books or reading ebooks is another way to get your minutes. Research indicates that children of all ages need to hear and read good literature daily. Reading to your child provides an emotional bond, which will create long lasting memories for your child. Reading not only entertains it informs and explains. Fun Reading and Incentives! One reason to participate is you get to learn and read new literature! Each six weeks we will be working towards a fun reward. If we reach our school goal we will have a school wide fun reading event! Each time a student turns in their log with the equivalent of 20 minutes each day on it, their name will go into a drawing for some fun prizes! The BES Reading Challenge will end on May 1st. Students can read on any day, for any amount of time, but plan ahead for those crazy schedules. Reading 3,000 minutes takes time, commitment and planning. If a student reads every night they will have only about 20 minutes to read each day. Remember: If we work together and read a little each day, we can do it! So bring it on! Let the Two Million Minute Reading Challenge Begin! |
